It’s easy to just do the standard box-of-chocolate and card for Valentine’s Day, but we think Valentine’s Day deserves a little more respect. It is the holiday celebrating love, after all, and who couldn’t use a reminder of that? Whether you’re showing your love for a partner or for your most precious friends, a little effort can make a big difference.
Here are some of our favorite ideas for spreading the love on February 14th.
Happy National Popcorn Day! Popcorn has a long history, dating back thousands of years. To celebrate National Popcorn Day, we are taking a brief look at the history of popcorn and popcorn makers. Popcorn has become an extremely popular snack food and a healthy one at that. It is a whole grain, full of fiber, gluten free, and low in fat and calories. This is, of course, popcorn without all the butter and salt that movie theaters and a lot of people add to it. All in all, popcorn is a pretty great snack.
A chuppah is a traditional Jewish wedding canopy. The exact history behind the use of a chuppah is a little unclear. They are considered a covering and a symbol of the home the couple will share together. In some ceremonies this was shown with a veil the groom would put over the bride, others it was a cloth that covered both of their heads or was draped over their shoulders. Sometimes this cloths was a prayer shawl, while other times it was just a nice piece of cloth. Now the chuppah is commonly a huge piece of cloth held up by four poles which the couple stands under during the ceremony. This chuppah still symbolizes the home, with the open sides symbolizing hospitality. They can be made out of just about any material the couple wants, but has to be blessed by the rabbi before the ceremony.
